Governors

Welcome to our governors' section.

A message from the Chair of Governors

The Federation of Newent Schools, incorporating Glebe Infant and Picklenash Junior School, has continued to go from strength to strength in recent years. The process of federation was a unique opportunity for us to develop a vision for primary education in Newent which involved parents, pupils and staff. By working collaboratively, we have managed to share the expertise and resources that we have across both schools and increase the efficiency with which we deliver high quality education for our children.

I am proud to be the elected Chair of Governors as our governing body is made up of diverse and highly committed individuals who all want to see the very best for our children.  My own background is in business and although there may be little direct connection to education, some of the most important aspects for the working of a governing body are the same: strategic planning, financial acumen and the comprehension of data, policies and protocol. As somebody not trained in education, it is exciting to see therefore just how passionate the staff and governors of our federation are about delivering the highest standards of education to prepare our children for a life of learning.

Our team of governors has a wide range of expertise from the world of education, business, health, welfare & safeguarding and finance. Our role is to challenge and support the leadership of the school by acting as a critical friend to ensure that every decision and any changes made are for the benefit of our young people. Each governor has a nominated role concentrating on a certain aspect of school life (for example SEN, Safeguarding, English etc) and carries out regular monitoring visits with a focus on particular issues that may have arisen or to determine the impact of previous actions. The subsequent report is shared amongst other governors with a chance to more fully discuss at the next meeting.

In September 2017 we re-organised the way we work as a governing body and now only have one stand alone committee for Finance & Resources. All other business is carried out by the full governing body with more regular meetings than previously. This allows us to work more effectively by integrating governor visits and subsequent reports in to the business plan for the year and being able to deal with matters arising more expediently.

Being a school governor is a fantastic way to help the schools to move forwards and we are always looking for others to join us. If you feel you would like to share any expertise you may have including your ideas and opinions, then we would love to hear from you. I can be contacted at chair@newentfed.org .

Mr Gary Bottomley
Chair of Governors

Current Governors for the Federation of Newent Schools

The governing body for the Federation of Newent Schools was re-constituted in May 2015 and now comprises a maximum of nine full-time governors, plus any number of associate governors. Associate governors are invited to join meetings for specific reasons, but do not have any voting rights. We formally gather as a full governing body for nine planned meetings per year and three times as a smaller committee under the title of Finance & Resources. During the year 2016/17 we met as three committees: Finance & Premises (F&P), School Improvement (SI) and Personal Development & Well Being (PD&W).
